Interfacial Tension (IFT) Test
Testing Standard: IS 6104 / ASTM D971
Interfacial Tension between transformer oil and water indicates the presence of polar contaminants, oxidation products, and soluble sludge precursors. A new transformer oil typically has an IFT value above 40 mN/m.
Decreasing IFT values are an early warning sign of oil deterioration and predict future sludge formation, which can clog cooling ducts and cause overheating. Regular IFT monitoring helps plan oil reconditioning.
