Viscosity

The Transformer Oil Viscosity Test measures the resistance of insulating oil to flow at a specified temperature. Viscosity directly affects the oil’s ability to circulate within the transformer and efficiently dissipate heat.

Maintaining proper viscosity is essential to ensure effective cooling, especially in power and distribution transformers operating under varying load conditions.

Why Viscosity Testing is Important

Transformer oil must flow freely to remove heat generated in the core and windings. Abnormal viscosity can:

  • Reduce cooling efficiency

  • Increase operating temperature

  • Accelerate insulation ageing

  • Indicate oxidation or contamination

  • Affect transformer performance under cold conditions

Higher viscosity reduces convection flow, while excessively low viscosity may indicate improper oil grade or contamination.

When is the Test Recommended?

  • Verification of new oil

  • During commissioning

  • After oil replacement or topping-up

  • Routine oil condition monitoring

  • When overheating issues are observed

Benefits of Viscosity Testing

  • Ensures proper heat dissipation

  • Confirms oil grade compliance

  • Detects contamination or ageing

  • Supports preventive maintenance

  • Enhances transformer operational reliability
