Understanding the BDV Test for Transformer Oil

Transformer oil plays a critical role in insulation and cooling within power transformers. Over time, contamination from moisture, particles, and oxidation can reduce its insulating strength. This is where the Breakdown Voltage (BDV) Test becomes essential.

What is the BDV Test?

The BDV (Breakdown Voltage) Test measures the dielectric strength of transformer oil — in simple terms, its ability to withstand electrical stress without failing.

During the test, a controlled voltage is applied between two electrodes immersed in the oil sample. The voltage is gradually increased until the oil breaks down and allows current to pass. The voltage at which this happens is recorded as the BDV value (usually in kV).
